"For a resilient nation, all members of the community need to understand their role in minimising the impacts of disaster, and hence the relevant knowledge skills and abilities to take appropriate action."
The Disaster Resilient Australia New Zealand School Education Network (DRANZSEN) consists of representatives from education and emergency services, NGOs, universities, local government and community groups.
Participants at the DRANZSEN Forums will explore effective models of disaster resilience education (DRE) to reduce risk and strengthen communities, through student participation and partnership for learning.
The 2019 DRANZSEN Forum series will explore:
- the National Study for Child-Centred Disaster Risk Reduction
- Poetic Voices from Black Saturday: a secondary school case study
- opportunities to integrate DRE through technology
- emergency management for students with special needs.
Who should attend?
- School leadership teams and staff interested in STEM partnerships to reduce risk and build resilience in their local community
- Emergency service representatives involved in youth and community education who want to share practice and collaborate with others
- Representatives from the Department of Education, Catholic Education, and the independent schools sector
- Subject-specific teacher associations, other agencies and affiliated organisations.
Disaster resilience education
To develop safe and resilient communities, young learners need to understand the nature of hazards and risk in their local environment and their role in reducing exposure and vulnerability to harm. DRE equips young Australians with the skills and opportunities to take protective action before, during and after an emergency or disaster.
AIDR Education for Young People Program
The Education for Young People Program supports the implementation of initiatives which empower young people to participate as active members of communities, working in partnership for a sustainable, resilient future.
The Disaster Resilience Australia New Zealand Schools Education Network (DRANZSEN) seeks to:
- communicate a shared understanding of DRE connected to international frameworks and relevant to an Australian context
- build the capacity of teachers and other educators to deliver effective and sustainable DRE to young people, informed by contemporary research and aligned with the Australian Curriculum
- provide a forum for schools, emergency management agencies and community organisations in the network to share knowledge, good practice and strategic objectives related to DRE
- facilitate networking and collaboration between stakeholders in the design and delivery of new DRE initiatives.
